The ban on commercial whaling is one of the greatest conservation victories of all time. Before it became law in 1986, whaling had brought entire species to the brink of extinction.

Despite the ban on commercial whaling, three countries still defy public opinion and continue to hunt whales for profit. Norway, Iceland and Japan kill hundreds of whales a year, including endangered species. They all want to find new international markets for whale products and they work hard to overturn the whaling ban at the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Giving in to the whalers now on these issues means many more thousands of intelligent animals may be killed. Animals who like us have culture, rituals, traditions, strong family bonds, a sense of self and the ability to suffer unimaginable pain at the end of a harpoon.

Donations from Sea Life visitors have raised around £200,000 (€240,000) to build the centre on the GreekislandofZakynthos.

Its completion will mean injured loggerhead turtles found around the island’s shores can receive speedy treatment and care, rather than face an eight-hour journey to the next nearest facility inAthens.

“The Rescue Centre will be able to take in casualties by early June at the latest,” saidLeigh Hotson“ The island is the most important loggerhead nesting site in theMediterranean, but numbers are in decline due to the impact of the tourist industry.

“Every adult turtle saved by the new Centre and free to continue breeding could be vital to their future survival.”

Sea Life is the world’s first aquarium chain to establish a working marine life rescue-station, and does not intend its support to end there. 

“We will send our own staff to help run the facility and to join volunteers working for Zakynthos-based NGO Earth, Sea & Sky in monitoring and protecting turtle nests,” saidLeigh Hotson

“And we are continuing to raise funds to help off-set operating costs such as veterinary bills.” 

Fundraising during the Centre’s special ‘Turtle Festival’  which runs from  2^nd June to 10^th June, will be run alongside a host more turtle-themed activities, including….

These weekly classes run each Saturday between 2-4pm. Classes are suitable for both beginners and improvers, and will explore drawing techniques for both still life and landscape. Other techniques covered include watercolours washes, monoprinting and more.

Classes can be booked in a block of ten at a cost of £135, and basic materials will be provided.
